Biographical Information

Harvey G. Perry operated the H. G. Perry and Company in the late 1890s; the store was located on Richmond Avenue and Etter (Church) Street in Rural Retreat, Wythe County, Virginia. Born 16 December 1838 in Wythe County, Virginia, Perry (often spell Peery) was the son of farmer William Perry and Theresa Kinser. He served in Co. I, 29th Virginia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He suffered a arm wound that bothered him all his life.He married Eliza Shaver and farmed in Rural Retreat, Virginia. The couple had no known children. In June 1897 Perry purchased land east of the Rural Retreat depot from R. S. Doak, presumably for his store. In October 1904, he sold a building to the Rural Retreat Produce and Mining Company. Perry died 21 April 1917 in Rural Retreat. He was initially buried on the family farm but in 1958 his remains and those of his parents and wife were moved to St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetery.
